The springboard in Ornette Coleman's pursuit of freedom of expression as a soloist, Tomorrow Is The Question! is notable for its lack of piano, which the saxophone maverick chose to strike from the record in favor of a quartet composed of drummer Shelly Manne, trumpeter Don Cherry, and alternatingly Percy Heath and Red Mitchell on bass. Coleman's belief was that removing piano and thus layers of harmonic structure, would allow the soloists to truly roam freely around the tune, pioneering new dimensions in sonic interplay. As a result, Tomorrow Is the Question! was a very literal title; where would Coleman's iconoclastic vision take him next? The free-jazz pioneer was just getting started, and what a dazzling start it is!
