Notes / Reviews

Heart On is the third studio album from American rock band Eagles of Death Metal, released on Oct 28, 2008.

When asked about the album, lead singer Jesse Hughes stated: "EODM's latest fabulous weapon, a top-secret music missile, a sonic warhead sexually tipped for her pleasure, shot from the deck of USS EODM Mantastic Fantastic." The album was mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Brian Gardner. On September 12, 2008, Pitchfork Media released new information on Heart On, including the album cover and tracklist. The cover was designed by Kii Arens using some of the bands gear a red coiled story on the companies site

The first single was "Wannabe in LA". The video for the song debuted on the band's MySpace and depicts Jesse Hughes appearing on a Pin Art in a similar style to the music video for Nine Inch Nails' "Only". There is an alternative version of the video; dubbed the "standard version", which only features Jesse Hughes. The video was directed by Liam Lynch.

Artist/Band Information

Eagles of Death Metal are an American garage rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1998 by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. Despite the name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band. Hughes said that a friend was trying to introduce Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was death metal, Homme called them "The Eagles of Death Metal". After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like.http In a 2003 interview Homme described the sound of the band as a combination of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals."

Jesse Hughes is known and loved by fans for his enthusiastic and charismatic interaction with audiences at live performances.

They have just been added to the Voodoo Experience lineup which will take place over Halloween weekend 2010 in New Orleans, LA.

History

Early years (1998-2003)

Eagles of Death Metal formed in Palm Desert, California in 1998 and first appeared on Josh Homme's The Desert Sessions Volumes 3 & 4, released that year. Over the next few years, Homme became distracted from the band due to the success of Queens of the Stone Age. However, in an October 2008 interview, he reaffirmed his commitment to the band saying, "This isn't a side project for me. I'm in two bands. I have musical schizophrenia, and this is one of those personalities.

Peace, Love, Death Metal (2004-2005)

The band finally released their debut album in the March of 2004: Peace, Love, Death Metal. It appeared to be a favorite of advertisers, as several songs from it were used in American television commercials including those for Ask.com, Comcast, Payless ShoeSource, Nissan Motors, Budweiser, Pontiac Motors, Wendys, as well as in the trailer for the film Thank You for Smoking and for a promotional disc for the film Grindhouse which was available prior to the film's release at Hot Topic stores.

The first song on the album, "I Only Want You," was also used on the soundtrack for the PS2 game Gran Turismo 4. Globe Shoes, a manufacturer of skateboard shoes, has featured the song in the montage section of episode 1 in their new series of skate films entitled, United By Fate. Recently, the track "Chase the Devil" from the album Death by Sexy was included in the soundtrack for Tony Hawk's Project 8. Not only that, the track "Don't Speak (I Came to Make a Bang!)" was part of the soundtrack for Electronic Arts' Need for Speed: Carbon. Recently, "Cherry Cola" was used in a Microsoft Zune commercial, and "Don't Speak" was featured in Epic Movie, where the band is seen playing it live; in addition, the song was used in a Guy Ritchie-directed Nike ad ahead of UEFA Euro 2008.

Death by Sexy (2006-2007)

Eagles of Death Metal returned on April 11, 2006 with their second effort Death by Sexy. During the first half of 2006 they toured in support of The Strokes and headlined their own U.S. tour with openers The Giraffes followed by dates opening for Peaches and performed with Joan Jett. In the fall of 2006 the band had an opening support slot with Guns N' Roses. During the first concert with Guns N' Roses, in Cleveland, Ohio on November 24, 2006, the band was not well received by the crowd at all. When Axl Rose came out to perform, he asked the crowd if they enjoyed "the Pigeons of Shit Metal," and announced that the show would be their last with Guns N' Roses. Shortly thereafter the band released a statement regarding the incident:

They took further stabs at Guns N' Roses, claiming that there was aggravation between Axl Rose and Tommy Stinson (the bassist of GN'R). Later they also claimed that Rose had invited the band back for the rest of their scheduled dates as support act. The band also received full payment for the entire tour despite playing only a single show with the band. At the band's November 18, 2008 show at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club, Jesse Hughes unveiled to the audience a "Pigeons of Shit Metal" tattoo on his left forearm that he acquired earlier in the day by artist Dave Waugh at Jinx Proof Tattoos in the Georgetown area of DC.

Heart On (2008-2009)

On October 21, 2008, ahead of their third album release, the Eagles of Death Metal performed a live concert at the Hollywood & Highland Virgin Megastore in Los Angeles for the launch of the video game Midnight Club: Los Angeles. The new single from the third album "Wannabe in L.A." is also in the game Midnight Club: Los Angeles. The song "Wannabe in L.A" is also featured in the music rhythm game Guitar Hero 5.

Their third album titled Heart On was released on October 28, 2008 (November 4, 2008 in Canada) and was accompanied by a North American tour. On February 4, 2009, Eagles of Death Metal performed on a live webcast for Fuel.tv as part of their Heart On tour.

In 2009 the Eagles of Death Metal performed as a warm up act on tour with Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys.

Next album and beyond (2010-present)

It was announced that the Eagles of Death Metal will perform in Milwaukee Wisconsin's new music festival, 'Verge', on June 4th, 2010 as well as two other tour dates in California, it was also revealed that Eagles of Death Metal are in works on a new album.

In 2010 the track "High Voltage" from their third album Heart On is featured in the online banner campaign for Head and Shoulders shampoo called It's "Showertime Joy" featured as web banner and on Youtube. In the video a man dances with four sexy nurses in a shower to the track by the Eagles of Death Metal. The song was also featured in the feature film Whip It starring Ellen Page .

In June 2010, it was announced in the media that current touring bassist Brian O'Connor had been diagnosed with cancer, for which he will be undergoing chemotherapy. Long time friend and collaborator Josh Homme along with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones of Them Crooked Vultures announced a concert at the Brixton Academy in London to raise money for O'Connor's treatment.

A statement from Brian O'Connor in regards to his diagnoses:

"In regards to my current health situation, with the remarkable support and love from my amazing friends and family, I am receiving the best medical and moral attention one could ask for. I cannot thank everyone enough for their continued support and involvement. I am excited for my full recovery and look forward to getting back to what I love most, melting face with my bass. I'm feeling great, after all, I am half unicorn. Keep ya posted."
